12 November 2011 I had this incredibly fun and awsome family shoot last Saturday. I had stopped shooting Families and Babies/Todlers/Children after my own little one was born. Due to an excessive amount of weddings we have been shooting, there was just no more gap between taking care of our baby and all the weddings. But somehow i just started missing these shoots, they were always so full of fun and laughter and joy. Children are such a blessing and no matter what they always brighten up your day. So as to this, i have decided to start up shooting Families and Babies again. Family fun. I actually do a lot of family shoots, I just don't advertise it very much. Families can be a lot of fun if they have an adventurous fun spirit. It can be just like a crazy fun family outing at the park, only with pictures. I don't believe in stuffy boring family pictures.
Family Colmer was just so fun and sweet. Liam at first did not know what to think of me with my camera and this silly long lens aiming at him...hihihih...we sat him into the long gras, we got some very astranged glances at first, but after several minutes he started warming up and gave us some very cute laughs and funny faces...
Kids will always be kids, so I just follow them around as they do their thing. I talk to them and listen to what they have to say. At first, most kids are a tad stilted, often stopping to ‘pose’ for me. However, they usually put it together fairly fast that I’m not really about the pose. That’s not to say I never make suggestions or help people arrange themselves into comfortable groups. But for the most part, with kids, I just like to let them go.
A family is a complex and shifting dynamic. You’re dealing with individuals and the ‘group mind’ at the same time. Photographing families requires several key components on the part of the photographer:
-
Patience
-
Keen observational skills
-
Flexibility
-
Patience
-
Tact
-
Diplomacy
-
Fast reflexes
-
Patience
-
Creativity
-
Good people skills
-
Patience
Did I mention it takes patience?
